We asked new dog walker, Ray Ireland, to review the Altitude OX i Waterproof walking boots on a recent 6 mile walk around Paglesham Circular in Rochford, Essex.
Ray said: “I’ve recently got into walking since adopting a dog (a 3 year old Labrador called Barney). It started with the necassary day to day dog walking, just a mile or two for Barney to get the excercise he needs. It wasn't long before I realised just how much I was enjoying our daily walks together and began to notice the positive effects it was having on me, both physically and mentally.
So I decided to up the ante and am now aiming to take on new 5-10 mile walks around Essex each weekend. It’s been great to discover new places, witness some amazing views and enjoy the peace and fresh air, while knowing that it’s good for my health too. If all goes well, Barney and I will be going on a proper hiking holiday next year and I'll actually be able to keep up with him!
It soon became clear that I’d need to invest in some decent men’s walking boots for my new found easy exercise regime. Especially before the english autumn weather (i.e. torrential rain) creeps in and ruins my trainers forever…
“Comfy walking boots is a MUST for me”
In particular, I wanted waterproof walking boots which would be easy to clean, give me some good grip on muddier walks, and still look good enough to head into the pub after for a well-deserved pint! Oh, and comfort. Comfy walking boots is a MUST for me if I’m to keep up with my new hobby.
I’m a bit of a gadget lover. So when Hi-Tec recommended the Altitude OX and told me they were ‘packed with technology’ I was intrigued. I didn’t even know there was such a thing as technology in footwear!
“I thought Michelin only did car tyres”
On further inspection, these boots have Michelin rubber outsoles (I thought Michelin only did car tyres – apparently not). The boots certainly gave me good grip when climbing up sea walls and down steep gravelly slopes, so the Michelin outsoles get a thumbs up from me. The boots also have Hi-Tec i-shield which means the dirt doesn’t cling and absorb on the uppers. That’s really important for the Altitude OX boots given the wheat suede coloured upper. I was worried about getting them dirty but they’ve been easy to clean (I followed Hi-Tec’s ‘How to Clean your Boots’ infographic guidelines) and still look like new several walks later.
The best thing about these boots by far is how comfortable they are. They have ‘Ortholite Impressions’ insoles. I'd never heard of these before, but I now want them in all my shoes and trainers!! It feels like spongey memory foam in the bottom of the boots. When I’ve had walking shoes in the past, I was always desperate to take them off and put my trainers on after a few hours. But in these I was quite happy to wear them for the rest of the day for a walk into town and pub lunch with friends. Comfortable walking boots = winner.
“…my feet remained completely dry.”
Unfortunately for Hi-Tec (and fortunate for me…) the weather has been nice, so I haven't had the opportunity to test the boots in muddy conditions. But I did test the Waterproof-ness in a 30 second puddle stand a few days later and can confirm that my feet remained completely dry. When they said waterproof boots, they mean it.
As for the look of them, I’m pleased. I’ve never been a fan of the standard brown leather hiking boots. But I’ve previously always thought that they’re the only ones that would really be able to handle the trails. Little did I know! These hiking boots have just the right amount of casual style whilst still being practical.
“…comfortable waterproof boots for walking the dog.”
Since taking these photos, I’ve been out on three more long walks as well as the shorter weekday dog walks and am still very happy. I’d highly recommend them to any men who want comfortable waterproof boots for walking the dog.
For those who don’t have a dog but live in a rural area or head out to the park or woods with the family a lot, I'd also recommend these. They look good enough to walk around the city, but can also deal with trails so can suit a family day out where you're dragged everywhere by the wife and kids!”
